Neutral atom imaging of the ionosphere and magnetosphere is possible because the Earth's geocorona acts like an imaging screen for magnetospheric and ionospheric ions. These ions charge exchange with cold neutrals in the geocorona creating a cold ion and a fast neutral. The hot neutral then travels ballistically to the imaging point, the LENA instrument.
